I hope these resources will be helpful. Please do share what you do :) and feel free to reach out if I can be of assistance. We're also reading New Kid in our library book club in October and I'm sure our kids will offer even more insights. Wishing you so much luck in your second year teaching. Your students are very lucky to have you. I truly believe that virtual book clubs are our most powerful resource to create community during this time. I hope you'll write about your experiences sharing New Kid, too; I'm sure others could learn from your experience too :) Please do let me know if there's anything I can do to support you. I launched a book group of New Kid yesterday and felt so prepared because I had spent so much time exploring your work. I am excited about leading virtual book groups this year due to COVID and I am looking forward to the rich discussion with my students and just wanted to once again say thank you!burlesothttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07689011725163346254noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8592131495636586349.post-30893984450401221502020-09-25T22:39:54.484-05:002020-09-25T22:39:54.484-05:00Thank you so much for your feedback! Graphic novels are such powerful tools to support people's language acquisition and provide additional visual cues and context clues. I hope you share your experiences and show others how you are using New Kid. (Also, Jerry has a sequel, Class Act, coming out on October 6, with some really fantastic events that your students and their families may be interested in attending. I'm so excited to get this book & share it with my community.) I use graphic novels as a way to teach the English language with visual literacy, so your question guide is a great tool for me. They are extremely helpful and will continue to be so on the day of our library book club with 8-12 year olds this summer.Tracyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07890070312567146276noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8592131495636586349.post-7965190510576936182020-04-07T08:02:27.918-05:002020-04-07T08:02:27.918-05:00Much thanks for preparing and sharing this resourc...Much thanks for preparing and sharing this resource. As a first ...Thank you so much for your kind words! As a first year teacher, there's so much to learn and do that's new. You're very much a new kid too :) Alas, I don't have a unit or lesson plan for these ideas that can be broken down into day 1, day 2, etc. I linked a bunch of resources that can help you teach it above. BUT ... this is what I'd recommend: teach New Kid like you'd do a book club in your classroom. When I do my book clubs, I immerse myself in the world of the book. I read the book repeatedly, fill it with post its, read articles, listen to podcasts, etc. I think about the kids in my club and plan specific questions and discussion points for them. With a large class, it's not always possible to have a whole group discussion but you could do literature circles or small group discussions. Since New Kid is so engrossing and appealing, resist the urge to require specific chapters read by x day and just discuss the whole book. This book offers so many opportunities to have rich conversations about kids' lives so plan A LOT and then let go of the plan to center what the kids want to talk about.. It take vulnerability and a release of control but it also gives them the chance to be heard and listen to each other. Set expectations, etc. at the beginning to share the air, etc. In the end, your students are going to really appreciate the chance to read New Kid and have the chance to explore this text with you. I hope that helps and I hope you'll share your experience. If I can be of any assistance, please let me know. I found your discussion questions and love the ideas and content behind them! Do you also have a lesson plan or unit plan to go along with them? Any tips or tricks about when to discuss certain things?

Thank you so much!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
